26046An inebriate named Edward Sanger was
found dead in his own house, at Beechworth,
Victoria, on the 22nd May. Medical evidence
showed that death had resulted from an enfeebled
state of the heart, induced by chronic alcoholism.

Edward Sanger, in the 50 year of his ageCaptain Sanger, a native of England, and a citizen
of the United States, and a pioneer of our State, hav-
lng arrived at San Francisco from Chili in the year
1848, as mate of the bark Romero of which the late
Captain George O. Johnson was master. Captain
Sanger was for many years master and owner of vex-sels sailing out of this port. About the year 1858 he
visited his parents in Australia, and soon after mar-
ried and settled near Adelaide, N.S.W., where he
founded the celebrated Corowa Vineyard, which isnow the largest and most profitable vineyard in thatcountry. He was an energetic and enterprising man,
full of generous and noble impulses, and fully repre-
sented the noblest handiwork of God - an honest man.In his death California has lost a son of her adoption
and the world’s busy fields a valuable worker. His
surviving father, aged 82, mourns the loss of a match-
less son. Faithful friend, peace to you ashes!
