Biography

   William Robards was the second son and third child of John Robards and Mary Reynolds [1].  He was born ca 1759 and baptized at St Nicholas, Sandhurst, Kent on 25 Feb 1759 [2].  William was a carpenter.  William married Sarah Longley at St Nicholas, Sandhurst on 27 Aug 1784.  The marriage was witnessed by John Slaughter and William Longley Jr.

   Sarah Longley was born ca 1759 and was baptized at St Nicholas, Sandhurst, Kent on 20 Oct 1759, the eldest child of William Longley and Mary Chrisford [1].  
    William and Sarah had nine children (John, Mary, James, Anne, Amy, Elizabeth, Harriet, Jane and Henry).  All were baptised St Nicholas, Sandhurst.  Of their sons, Henry died in infancy,  John (and Martha nee Reeves and 7 children) and James (and Sarah nee Chantler and 8 children) immigrated to Australia with their families.
    John died in 1835 and was buried on 11 Oct 1835 at St Nicholas, Sandhurst.  Sarah is mentioned in the 1841 census when she is recorded as living in the Sandhurst area with her grandson Edwin [3] (the illegitimate son of Jane).  Sarah died in 1841 and was buried on 3 Nov 1841 at St Nicholas, Sandhurst.

[1]  The surnames have not fixed until the twentieth century thus the Sandhurst parish records we find Robart, Robarts, Roberts and Robards.  Similarly Langley, Longley and Longly and Crisford, Chrisford and Chrisfourd.
[2]  It is believed that names William and John have been transposed in the St Nicholas baptismal records.  William's baptism is thus recorded as 1759 Feb 25 John s William and Mary Roberts.
[3]  The 1841 Census of Sandhurst [HO 107 475], Enumeration District 15 - all the houses from Lower Green to Conghurst, the boundary of Hawkhurst and Salehurst.
