Biography

    Thomas Oates is said to have been born at Gunwalloe, Cornwall in 1835, the son of William Oates and Millicent (nee Shepherd) [1, 2].  The third of a family of ten, he was christened on 26 December 1797 at St Keverne.  
    Thomas married Elizabeth Williams, the daughter of William Williams and Elizabeth Giles [3].
    Thomas and Elizabeth had a family of ten.  Elizabeth, William, Ann, John, Millicent, Grace, Thomas, Jane,  Samuel, and James.  All were christened at St Keverne.  Thomas's occupation given in the 1841 census was blacksmith.
    Thomas died at Traboe in 1861 and was buried at St Kerverne on 26 November 1861.  Elizabeth, together with her daughter, Grace (nee Pascoe) and granddaughter, embarked for Australia on the Hornet in 1865.
    A death record for Elizabeth has not been positively identified [4].  Elizabeth was buried in the Methodist cemetery at Byng, NSW an 8 Aug 1867.
